French Vat Cut Lessens Cost Of Eating Out - Irish Ferries

The reduction in VAT rates which came into force in restaurants and cafés across France from 1st July will make holidays less expensive for the thousands of Irish holidaymakers who will visit there this year, according to ferry operator Irish Ferries.

From Wednesday, July 1st, VAT rates applicable in all French restaurants and cafés were cut from 19.6% to 5.5%. As a result, Irish Ferries calculates that savings in the order 10% will be passed on to customers thereby reducing the cost of a typical meal from EUR15 to just above EUR13.

As a consequence, customers who seek out local restaurants for good value meals during the course of their holiday will notice that lunchtime meals and refreshments will be largely reduced from last year’s prices, a company spokesman said.
