Whether you’re planning a proposal, an intimate getaway, or a culinary adventure just for two, let Irish Ferries help you discover some of France’s hidden gems and enchanting experiences, proving why it remains an iconic destination for love in all its forms. Here are just some of our favourite.

Honfleur

Saint Catherine

Honfleur, a small coastal town in Normandy with charming cobblestone streets, half-timbered houses and the salty sea air all creating an effortlessly romantic atmosphere, ideal for couples seeking a gentle escape.

The town’s heart is the “vieux bassin”, a historic postcard-perfect harbour where tall houses reflect softly in the water. As evening falls and harbour lights glow, stroll the quays, wander through the Jardin Retrouvé before enjoying a quiet dinner and a glass of wine. Choose from one of the many delightful restaurants in the vicinity such as the traditional and intimate L’Envie, or Entre Terre et Mer, with both casual bistro and gastronomic dining options, or the charming Côté Resto on the historic Place Saint Catherine.

By day, art lovers will enjoy the Musée Eugène-Boudin, while the 17th century Chapelle Notre-Dame de Grâce rewards visitors with sweeping views over the estuary. For a comfortable night, try the elegant rooms at Entre Terre et Mer, or the charming 16th century Les Maisons de Léa with gorgeous modern rooms and a spa. For refined luxury, opt for La Ferme Saint-Siméon on the heights overlooking the historic centre just a 5-minute walk away.

Chateau dAngers

Set beside the Maine river at the edge of the UNESCO world heritage site of the Loire Valley, Angers is dominated by the magnificent fortress of the Château d’Angers with its 17 towers offering a 360 view of the city, and home also to the 14th century Apocalypse Tapestry telling epic stories of fate and destiny. Stop for some typical French galettes in the cosy Crêperie de la Château, before heading to the medieval historic centre where the narrow streets are ideal for strolling and shopping, and the 15th century Maison d’Adam is a must see.

For art lovers, don’t miss the 19th century Musée des Beaux-Arts modelled after the Louvre and housing a fine collection of works. Finish the day on the quays with the refined cuisine of La Maison, or one of the Michelin starred restaurants such as Lait Thym Sel. For a peaceful retreat for the night, Château des Forges is set within six hectares of beautiful grounds and panoramic views of the Saint-Aubin valley.

Be sure to dedicate time to wine, with Angers the perfect starting point for discovering the wine region of Anjou-Saumur, such as the idyllic Château Pièguë, just one of the many historic vineyards offering free tastings as well as comfortable B&B for a night’s stay.

Chateau de Chantilly

The wonderful towns of Chantilly and Senlis are the perfect choice for a romantic weekend, offering culture, grandeur and history in a setting so peaceful, it’s hard to believe you are just 30 minutes north of Paris.

Aside from the famous cream, Chantilly is best known for the magnificent Château de Chantilly, surrounded by 115 acres of gardens, and home to the Condé Museum, one of France’s most impressive art collections, and the Museum of the Horse dedicated to equine art and culture. Complete your trip by trying the famous cream in the château’s tearoom la Capitainerie or opt for the elegant La Bohème in the centre of Senlis, where you can also dine in its excellent restaurant. Just 15 minutes away, the medieval town of Senlis has the remains of the 3rd century ancient wall of Augustomagus built by the Gallo-Romans. Medieval fortifications by the Nonette river are perfect for a romantic stroll before heading to the historic centre with its cobbled streets and buildings like 13th century St. Maurice Priory or the Musée d’Art and Archéologie in a former episcopal palace.

Enjoy typically French cuisine in the historical building of Chez Nous, or hearty refined dishes in the cosy Bistrôt du Senlis. For a truly romantic night, stay in the 19th century Manoir des Cavaliers in Chantilly, complete with a private garden, swimming pool and tennis court, or opt for the centre of Senlis, and the elegant La Bohème, which also boasts an excellent restaurant.

LeTouquet-CityHall

Le Touquet-Paris-Plage is a stylish coastal town famed for its wide sandy beach, elegant architecture and lively social scene, with an enduring Belle Époque charm.

With 7 miles of coastline, kick your day off with a visit to Berck beach and Le Touquet Beach, with an array of outdoor activities including surfing and wakeboarding, but one of the resort’s main activities is the thrilling “sandyachting”. For a gentler pace, couples can stroll bustling rue Saint-Jean, with chic boutiques and an array of chocolate and pastry shops or climb the 274 steps of the 57m tall La Canche lighthouse for coastal views. The town’s equestrian culture offers unforgettable horse-riding experiences along the shoreline or through pine forests.

Food options abound from the historic Brasserie Les Sports, welcoming guests since 1911, where you can have the perfect date night sharing a platter of seafood or try rustic wine bar restaurant les Canailles or go for unbeatable sea views at l’Enduro Plage. For a luxurious stay, the 5 star Le Westminster combines Art Deco elegance with forest surroundings, complete with a luxurious Spa, or opt for characterful properties like Le Manoir at Le Touquet Golf Resort, or high-end guesthouse Haec Otia with its cosy decor.

France – Food of love

French food and romance are often intertwined, with the cuisine often described as the “food of love”. Here’s our essential guide (and translations) for some key dishes:

Oysters (Huîtres): a natural aphrodisiac, oysters are a quintessential starter for lovers. Enjoy them with a dash of “mignonette” sauce (made with minced shallots, red wine vinegar, and cracked pepper).

Snails (Escargots): Snails served in garlic butter are widely considered a romantic dish, and perfect for sharing in a romantic dinner.

French Onion Soup (Soupe à l’Oignon): Onions have historically been considered an aphrodisiac, with an old tradition of serving onion soup to newlyweds the morning after their wedding to help “cement desire”.

Chocolate (Chocolat): Once favoured by the French royal court, chocolate contains compounds such as serotonin, linked to happiness. Dark chocolate in particular is a sensual indulgence and can be found in many French desserts like Mousse au Chocolat (Chocolate Mousse), Moelleux au Chocolat (melting middle chocolate cake) or luxurious Pots de Crème au Chocolat (Chocolate Cream Pots).

Strawberries (Fraises): Red heart shaped strawberries hold a revered place with the French taking great pride in their varieties, often consuming them simply with sugar or crème fraîche, or in iconic patisserie like the Fraisier cake or a Tarte aux Fraises.

Champagne: All these aphrodisiac delights can be toasted with Champagne, the quintessential drink linked to romance since the 18th century, with its aromas said to echo pheromone-like notes that heighten the senses.
